What’s in Your Hand?

What’s in Your Hand?

“But Moses protested again, “What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? What if they say, ‘The Lord never appeared to you’?” Then the Lord asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A shepherd’s staff,” Moses replied.” Exodus‬ ‭4‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

In Exodus 3 and 4, Moses is wrestling with doubt. God calls him to lead Israel out of Egypt, but Moses questions his worth, his ability, and whether people will even believe him. “What if they won’t listen?” he asks (Exodus 4:1). Instead of answering with grand signs immediately, God responds with a simple question: “What is that in your hand?” (Exodus 4:2).

Moses holds an ordinary shepherd’s staff—just a piece of wood. But in God’s hands, that staff will part the Red Sea, bring water from a rock, and serve as a sign of divine power. What Moses sees as insignificant, God sees as an instrument for miracles.

This is something I struggle with, questioning if I was sure the Lord has called me because of my past, the way I talk and how can I influence and guide His people when I know so little. How can I tell these people who know how I was that the way they are living is wrong? How can I tell these saints who have been living for you for a long time something they do not know? How can I stand before those who are more knowledgeable and graceful than me? It is completely normal to wonder these thing because my question is are you going to stand in place or are you going to be obedient and listen to the Lord.

Since like Moses, we often feel inadequate. We sometimes think we lack talent, resources, or confidence, lets not forget Jeremiah had similar doubts, saying, “I cannot speak, for I am a youth”” (Jeremiah 1:6). But God reminds him, “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ for you shall go to all to whom I send you” (Jeremiah 1:7).

God doesn’t ask us for what we don’t have—He asks for what’s in our hands. That could be a skill, a resource, or simply a willing heart. Whatever we surrender to Him, He will use for His glory.

Today, ask yourself: “What’s in my hand?” It may seem small, but in God’s hands, it can change lives. Trust Him, step forward in faith, and watch Him work through you.

Prayer:

Lord, I often feel inadequate, but I trust that You have given me everything I need for the calling You have placed on my life. Help me to surrender what I have, no matter how small, and trust You to use it for Your glory. Amen.
